What issues can maternal counseling help with?
No. Maternal counseling is beneficial for mothers at any stage—whether you’re:
- Pregnant and struggling with prenatal anxiety or depression
- In the first year postpartum navigating new motherhood
- An experienced mother dealing with ongoing parenting stress
- Trying to conceive and managing the emotional toll
- Experiencing a pregnancy loss or infant loss
Whether you’re seeking support during pregnancy, dealing with postpartum adjustment, processing birth trauma, or addressing ongoing parenting concerns, we’re here to help. Maternal mental health doesn’t have an expiration date.
What if I'm having scary thoughts about my baby?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and we’re so glad you’re asking. Intrusive, disturbing thoughts about harm coming to your baby are a symptom of perinatal OCD or postpartum anxiety—and they are treatable.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Having these thoughts does NOT mean you will act on them
- These thoughts don’t reflect your character or your love for your baby
- They are anxiety symptoms, not desires or intentions
- You are not dangerous to your baby
- Treatment is effective and you can feel better
Our therapists are specifically trained in perinatal OCD and understand how to help you manage these thoughts safely. You’re not alone, and you’re not a bad mother. This is a medical condition, and we can help.
What can I expect during my first session?
Your first maternal counseling session is a conversation, not an interrogation. You can expect:
A Safe, Non-Judgmental Space
We understand how hard it is to admit you’re struggling. There’s no shame here—only support.
Understanding Your Experience
Your therapist will ask about your pregnancy, birth experience (if applicable), current challenges, sleep, support system, and what you’re hoping therapy will help with.
Clarity About What You’re Experiencing
We’ll help you understand whether what you’re feeling is normal adjustment to an overwhelming life change or a perinatal mood disorder that needs clinical support.
A Plan Moving Forward
We’ll discuss goals, frequency of sessions, and practical strategies you can start using immediately.
This initial session builds rapport and sets the foundation for your therapy journey. Most moms leave the first session feeling relief just from being heard and understood.
How often will I need to attend counseling sessions?
The frequency depends on your specific needs and goals. Your therapist will work with you to create a schedule that supports your progress and fits your life.
Typical session frequencies:
- Weekly sessions: Most common for acute postpartum depression or anxiety
- Bi-weekly sessions: Common once you’re stabilized and building on progress
- Monthly sessions: For maintenance or ongoing support during motherhood transitions
Many moms start with weekly sessions for the first 4-8 weeks, then space out to bi-weekly or monthly as they feel better. We’re flexible and responsive to your needs throughout your journey.
Important: Unlike some conditions that resolve quickly, maternal mental health support may extend 3-6+ months. This isn’t because you’re broken—it’s because motherhood is an ongoing adjustment, and having consistent support creates lasting change.
Will my counseling sessions be confidential?
Yes. All counseling sessions are strictly confidential. Our therapists adhere to professional ethics and HIPAA guidelines to protect your privacy.
Limited exceptions to confidentiality include:
- Risk of harm to yourself or your baby (we prioritize safety)
- Suspected child abuse or neglect (legal reporting requirement)
- Court orders (rare)
These exceptions will be discussed during your first session to ensure complete transparency. Your safety, your baby’s safety, and your privacy are our top priorities.
Important for moms: If you share that you’re having intrusive thoughts about harm to your baby, this does NOT automatically trigger a report. Intrusive thoughts are an anxiety symptom, not intent. We understand the difference, and we’re here to help you—not judge or report you for having a treatable condition.
How do I know if I need help or if this is just normal "new mom" stuff?
This is one of the most common questions we hear, and it’s a good one. Here’s a helpful guideline:
Normal adjustment to motherhood:
- Feeling overwhelmed sometimes
- Missing your old life occasionally
- Getting frustrated or crying when exhausted
- Worrying about your baby’s health or safety
- Needing breaks and support
Signs you could benefit from professional support:
- Overwhelming sadness or anxiety that doesn’t lift
- Feeling disconnected from your baby or unable to bond
- Intrusive, disturbing thoughts that won’t go away
- Difficulty sleeping even when you have the opportunity
- Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
- Feeling like you’re “going through the motions”
- Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby
- Inability to function or care for yourself/your baby
Bottom line: If you’re asking the question “Do I need help?”, you probably do—or at least deserve support. You don’t have to be in crisis to reach out. Early support prevents crisis.
